The Meaning of the Candy Cane

A Candy maker in Indiana wanted to make a candy that would be a reminder of Jesus’ birth, ministry, and death so he made the Christmas Candy Cane.

He began with a stick of pure white, hard candy. White to symbolize the Solid Rock, the foundation of the Church and the firmness of the promises of God.

Next, the candy maker made the candy in the shape of a “J to represent the name of Jesus. It could also represent the staff of the “Good Shepherd when turned upside down.

Thinking that the candy was somewhat plain, the candy maker stained it with red stripes. He used three small stripes to show the stripes of the scourging that Jesus received by which we are healed and one large red stripe was for the blood shed by Christ on the cross so that we could have the promise of eternal life.

Unfortunately, the candy became know as a Candy Cane- a meaningless decoration seen at Christmas time. But the meaning is still there to be a reminder of Jesus. Our prayer is that the symbol will again be used to remind us all of Jesus.

Perhaps you could share the meaning behind the Candy Cane with your Family this Christmas.
